As a young boy, José dreamed of traveling to space.
When José Hernández was a child, his family worked as migrant farmers. They traveled from farm to farm to pick crops like tomatoes and grapes. José said, "Some kids might think it would be fun to travel like that. But we had to work. It wasn't a vacation."
José attended many different schools because his family moved from farm to farm every single year. This was hard for José. He missed school a lot to help his family work on farms. The farm work was very difficult and exhausting. José was very tired during the school day. Life continued like this for many years.
When José was 10, his parents decided it was time to settle in Southern California. Now, José could attend the same school all year. This was also the year when NASA launched the Apollo 17 mission to the moon. José watched on TV as an American astronaut walked on the moon. The next day at school, his teacher asked the class to draw a picture of the job they wanted when they grew up. José drew a picture of a rocket and said he wanted to be an astronaut.
José went to college and became an engineer. It was a perfect fit for his wonderful abilities in math. Still, the idea of being an astronaut never left his mind.
José applied to the NASA astronaut program every year for 11 years. Every single time, NASA said, “No.” One night, his wife asked him, “What can astronauts do that you cannot do?” He gave her a list. They could speak multiple languages. They were certified scuba divers and were pilots. He remembered that his father always said to him, “If you don’t know how, learn.” With support from his wife, he got busy! He learned to speak Russian. He became a certified scuba diver. He learned to fly a plane. Finally, on his 12th application in 2004, NASA said “Yes!”
José Hernández was accepted as an astronaut when he was 42 years old. That was 32 years after his dream began in front of the family’s TV. In 2009, José Hernández rode the Space Shuttle Discovery into space. “You feel like Superman when you are up there because you are floating, you’re flying. So, it’s the greatest feeling in the world,” explained Hernández.
José stayed at the International Space Station for 14 days. His team added a whole new room to the International Space Station. They also installed solar panels and batteries to power the room.
José Hernández was the first American migrant farmer to travel to space. He doesn’t want to be the last. “Like my dad told me,” José said, “There are no shortcuts. You gotta do the work.” So, he started the Reaching for the Stars Foundation to inspire children to enjoy science, technology, engineering, and math. He wants to encourage children to work hard and never give up on their dreams.
